Skimming Mode at ATM!

How to Avoid ATM Skimming Mode (Data Information Theft)?

1. Take a good look at the condition of the ATM machine

  • Make sure the machine does not have any tape, glue marks, or many scratches. When inserting the card, if you feel that the machine slot is loose, pull the card and cancel the transaction.
  • If you are unaware and have already inserted the card in the machine with the aforementioned condition, cover the PIN code with your hand when making a transaction.
  • Covering your PIN code by hand should be done to prevent your PIN being recorded by the camera(s) installed by the fraudsters.
  • You can immediately consult with the bank you use regarding the security of information and balances after transacting on a machine which is suspected tampered with skimmers.

2. Use a crowded ATM machine

  • ATM fraud is more likely to occur in quiet and unattended ATMs.
  • ATMs that are in less-crowded places and have few visitors provide free space for criminals to install skimmers on ATM machines; especially if there is no CCTV on the ATM machine.
  • Criminals are less likely to install skimmer devices in busier ATMs.

3. Change ATM PIN regularly

  • Change your debit card PIN PIN regularly, especially after you accidentally insert the card into a machine which is suspected to have a skimmer installed.
